Obituary for Helen A. DeSimone

Helen A. DeSimone
Helen A. DeSimone, 98

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at St. Christine Church in Youngstown for Helen A. DeSimone, 98, who passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, surrounded by her loving family.
Helen was born Feb. 18, 1917, in Youngstown, the daughter of Quintliano and Anna (DiSalvo) Marinelli.
Helen was very active for being 98 years young. She was the matriarch of her family, being the youngest and only survivor of 10 children. She was still independent, as she lived in a duplex alongside her nephews, Frank and John Stas, who aided her in her livelihood and love of life.
Helen was a graduate of East High School and worked for 20 years as a supervisor at Strouss Bakery and Deli. Prior to that, she was employed with Mangles and Kreske. She was a member of St. Christine Church.
Her husband, James DeSimone, whom she married on July 1, 1944, passed away on Aug. 19, 1969.
Helen loved going to Mountaineer and the new Austintown Racino. She enjoyed going out to eat and attending family functions. Her favorite was the Sunday evening crowd, where food, laughs and numerous stories were told. It was the comic relief so needed by everyone.
She lovingly cared for many family members over the years and never put herself first. She lived life to the fullest and truly cherished her family and friends. Helen loved attending basketball games where her son-in-law coached. Her claim to basketball fame was her “E” from East High School, where she was on the basketball team.
Helen will always be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Roseann (John) Cullen of Boardman; granddog Jack; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Barrett, Florence Stas, Antoinette DeMain and Lucy Marinelli; and five brothers, Perry, Joseph, James, Dominic and Louis Marinelli.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 27, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman and again, on Saturday, March 28, at St. Christine Church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass.
Helen’s family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the sixth and seventh floor staff at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, the rehabilitation wing of nurses and physical therapists at Assumption Village, and the entire staff at the Hospice House for the kind and compassionate care shown to Helen.
