Shirley was born June 19, 1929, in Youngstown, the eldest of six, to Ralph and Helen (Graham) Caldwell.
She was a telephone operator with the Medical-Dental Bureau and was the switchboard operator with Dollar Bank, where she retired in 1994. She was a member of St. Dominic Church. Shirley had happy memories of ice skating at Crandall Park as a youth, the yearbook committee at The Rayen School, where she graduated in 1947, and then working in downtown Youngstown, where she met her husband.
She had a love for all music. She played the piano by ear and never lost her sense of rhythm for music as she grew older. Family will always have fond memories of Shirley accompanying her son, Robert, on the piano, who shared her passion for music. Playing songs such as, “Whipping Post” and “Statesboro Blues” by the Allman Brothers Band, anything from the Eagles or Clapton, and the Boogie Woogie. She was a sweet and gentle soul who loved her family passionately and unconditionally.
She will be remembered with immense love, by her family, including her husband, Joseph, whom she married on Dec. 1, 1951; her sons, Robert of Youngstown, and Joseph (Toni) of Venice, Fla.; and daughters Laura (Tom) Duffy of Austintown and Lisa (Gary) Mudryk of Struthers. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Tommy, Scotty and Erin Duffy and Anthony and Gary Mudryk. Besides her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her sister, Janice Richards; brother Richard Caldwell; brothers-in-law John Richards, Richard Cramer, and John Kovach; and sister-in-law Victoria Rendano.
Shirley will be dearly missed and the family would like to express their heartfelt thanks for all the kindness shown to her.
