Obituary for Edward F. Orlando

Edward F. Orlando
Edward F. Orlando, 93
YOUNGSTOWN - Edward F. Orlando, 93, was born in Youngstown on Oct. 17, 1922, to immigrant parents from Agnone, Italy, Anthony and Ida D’Aloise Orlando. He was reared in the Smokey Hollow area and the east side of Youngstown. He was a proud Golden Bear graduate of East High School, class of 1940, where he was a member of the basketball team.
During World War II, Edward served in the Pacific Theatre as a radio operator with the U.S. Coast Guard. Edward joined the Youngstown Fire Department, rising through the ranks as driver to the chief and retiring in 1984, after serving as captain at several stations. He was also employed at the Hearn Paper Company, Youngstown Floral Company, and Perry Floral of Girard.
Edward enjoyed daily walks in the Cornersburg area and was an avid golfer in several leagues, most recently in the St. Anthony’s Golf League at Tanglewood Golf Course. He enjoyed watching all sporting events, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Cavaliers. A strong supporter of his Italian culture, Edward was Youngstown’s Italian Man of the Year in 2013. He greatly enjoyed attending the Brier Hill, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and the Youngstown Italian festivals, as well as the monthly spaghetti dinners with his family. In his younger days he made and shared his own wine and produce grown from his garden.
Edward was a founding member of St. Christine Parish, and until the fall of 2015, ushered at the 7 a.m. Sunday Mass.
He leaves his family to carry on his legacy, his wife, the former Margaret DePascale, whom he married almost 65 years ago on July 11, 1951, at St. Anthony’s Church in Brier Hill; three daughters, Mary Jo (Bill) Olson, Jacqueline (Leo Madden), and Geri (Jim) DeCenso; grandchildren Christina (Mark) Smith, and Elizabeth and James Madden; great-grandchildren Stephen, Mary Margaret and Will Smith; his sister, Dorothy (Tony) DiGiacomo; his cousin, Nellie Pisani and her daughter, Cynthia Neme (Pablo Golmajer), of Buenas Aires, Argentina; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Clara Ross and Josephine Passarelli; brothers James, Nick and Herman Orlando; and a grandson, William Edward Olson.
Calling hours will be held Sunday, Jan. 24, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman, from 4 until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 25, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Christine Church.
The family is grateful for the support and care provided by Dr. David Rich and Dr. Memo and their staffs.
In lieu of floral tributes or other remembrances, the family respectfully requests donations be sent to the Hattie Larlham Foundation, 7996 Darrow Road, Twinsburg, OH 44087, Attn: Children’s Disability.
