Obituary for Thomas P. Scanlon

Thomas P.  Scanlon
On June 6, 2016, God called his friend Thomas P. Scanlon back to be with him. Thomas was born on Jun 30, 1934 in Youngstown, the son of James and Adele (Sylvester) Scanlon. He grew up on the North side of Youngstown and attended St. Edward Catholic School and Rayen High School from 1948 to 1952. He then entered the United States Air Force where he was Crew Chief of the Jet Fighters. He was discharged honorably in 1956 with a rank of Sergeant. After the military Tom attended Youngstown College and obtained his Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1962. He made his career with United States Steel retiring after 30 years as a maintenance superintendent in 1994. Tom enjoyed golfing, the outdoors and was a private pilot. He enjoyed doing science projects with his grandchildren. Thomas will always be lovingly remembered by his wife of 39 years, the former Mary Marso; two children, Thomas (Lisa) Scanlon, and Barb Syfert; two step-children, Robert and Cathy McConnell; three grandchildren, Thomas (Katie) Scanlon, James (Jennifer) Scanlon, Eileen Syfert; step-granddaughter, Bianca Damanikon; and sister, Judy (Leonard) Penzo. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters, Betty Anderson, Elaine Kelly, Phyllis Stinger, Marie Andrews, Joretta Lindsay, and Laverne Synder; and two brothers, Jim and Jack Scanlon. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, June 10 at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Boardman followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Philip Rogers celebrating the life of Thomas. Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Avenue in Boardman.
