Obituary for Joseph T. "Gypsy" Zurko

Joseph T. "Gypsy" Zurko
YOUNGSTOWN - There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, followed by a noon Mass of Christian Burial at St. Angela Merici Church, 400 Lincoln Park Drive in Youngstown, with the Rev. Kevin Peters celebrating the life of Joseph T. “Gypsy” Zurko, 66, who passed away peacefully Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, after a brief illness, surrounded by his family.
He was born Aug. 26, 1950, in Youngstown, the son of Joseph T. and Isabella (Guy) Zurko.
Gypsy was a proud military veteran serving in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany, National Guard and the Air Force Reserves. He enjoyed working for many years at G.M. Lordstown, first in assembly and trim departments, then retiring from the paint department after 39 years of service. He was a loyal and proud member of U.A.W. Local 1112.
Gypsy’s greatest love was for his girls, the love of his life, his wife, Catherine; his daughter, Kelli; son-in-law Edwin, whom he considered the son he never had; and his granddaughters, E’mari and Jazlyn.
His greatest pastimes were visiting car shows with his daughter and granddaughters and spending time working in his yard and garden, which were his passion. He was a Cleveland Browns and Ohio State fan. He enjoyed traveling to Columbus to visit his granddaughter at Ohio State University.
Gypsy enjoyed his morning walks at the mall and caring for his brother-in-law, Tito Garcia. He loved music and dancing with his wife, Cathy.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 43 years, the former Catherine Garcia, whom he married June 30, 1973; daughter Kelli Zurko; son-in-law Edwin “Macho” Alvarez; two granddaughters, E’mari “Peanut” Zurko-Richardson and Jazlyn “Bubbles” Alvarez; grandson Ramon “Nito” Rivera; brother Leonard (Lynda) Zurko; aunt Carmela Guy; James (Sandy) Guy, whom he considered a brother; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and friends who he considered family.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by granddaughter, Johanna; sister Eileen Natal; uncle Herb Guy; and mother-in-law Isabela Garcia and father-in-law Isabelo Garcia, whom he loved and adored.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Manshi Joshia and the staff at ValleyCare Northside Medical Center for the kind and compassionate care shown to Gypsy.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family.
Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman.
